Can it be prevented?

One of the aspects that causes most anxiety in our patients is the need to prevent this pathology. It is important to point out that, in a high percentage of cases, the hereditary component is key and, therefore, regardless of how much effort is put into doing exercises and following preventive advice, there will always be a tendency to have varicose veins. On the other hand, when a patient has no genetic tendency towards varicose veins, they will probably never appear.

Advice for a healthy lifestyle

A series of general preventive measures exist to help to relieve their discomfort, even though they do not prevent the appearance of varicose veins.

  1. DAILY WALKING
Walking strengthens the leg muscles. The sole of the foot acts like a sponge and stimulates the venous return when you walk.
  2. NOT STANDING OR SITTING FOR A LONG TIME
Rest every hour. If you are seated, walk around for five minutes and, if you are standing, sit down with your legs up.
  3. COLD BATHS
Cold water contracts the blood vessels and strengthens the venous wall. Wet your legs with the shower, starting with your feet and slowly going up to your knees.
  4. A BALANCED DIET
Eat food with fibre (vegetables, brown bread, fruit, etc.) to prevent constipation and diuretics (asparagus, melon, pineapple, etc.) to prevent liquid retention. It is also important TO AVOID OBESITY.
  5. WEAR THE PROPER CLOTHING AND SHOES
Avoid tight clothing, use compression stockings and wear comfortable shoes with a heel of between 2 and 3 cm.
  6. DO REGULAR EXERCISE
WALKING AND SWIMMING ACTIVATES THE CIRCULATION.
  7. SPECIAL CREAMS
There are lotions and creams especially prescribed for heavy legs. Apply them after the shower with an upward massage.
  8. WEAR SPECIAL STOCKINGS if a specialist prescribes them.
    How do compression stockings work?
Compression stockings act by putting pressure on the veins AVOIDING THE DILATION OF THE WALLS AND FAVOURING THEIR ELASTICITY. With this, an attempt is made to reduce the size of the blood vessel to get it back to its original size as much as possible. For the stockings to act as they should, keep your legs up for a few minutes before you put them on.
  9. Take VENOUS TONICS, or medication that helps the return of blood.

Compressive therapy

There is a series of general preventive measures which help to relieve the discomfort of varicose veins, even though they do not prevent their appearance.

What is most important is that these therapeutics are taken under the correct prescription made by a professional.
There is a high rate of abandonment in wearing an elastic stocking because the ideal stockings for each case are not correctly prescribed, or because they are not correctly dispensed by the pharmacy or orthopaedics professional.

Knowing and keeping up to date on the products offered on the market is the responsibility of the professional, and this allows him to indicated the product that best suits to the leg of any particular patient.
